In case you missed it earlier this week, I released my latest project on Monday. Speak Easier is a short, practical guide to public speaking for everyone.
It’s less about sounding like a TED Talk and more about what to do before, during, and after a talk of any size. The questions to ask organizers, how to create slides, what to wear, how to handle Q&A, what networking looks like… it’s all there for just $15.
Oh, and I think I’m going to start sending this newsletter on Mondays instead of Fridays. Weeks have a habit of getting away from me, so I think I’ll be more successful sending it regularly when I can invest time earlier in the week while it’s still there. Just a heads up.
Some Interesting Things
Eric Bailey has a good article on why you should order your CSS declarations alphabetically (my preferred method for years). It’s about a lot more than that, though, and worth the read.
There’s been a decent amount of buzz about the NYC Mayoral primary and the fact that it’s using “ranked-choice voting.” If you’re not familiar with ranked-choice voting, this overview from Democracy Docket (which has been producing tons of amazing work) is a great explanation of one possible solution to our broken electoral system.
I love this animation from Andrea Dorfman and Tanya Davis. Lockdowns are easing up (at least here in the U.S.) but it still resonates. And it makes me want to become an animator.
I’m torn about this article from AIGA about podcast cover art. On one hand, I like when designers get to apply their trade and think podcast covers are a great medium to explore. On the other hand, I love that there’s still an amateur spirit in podcasting and that it shines through in the cover art. Maybe—just maybe—we don’t need to polish every single corner of the internet into the sameness that pervades most of the web?
The Regular Communication Playlist
Here are the songs keeping me going this week. Follow along on my official Spotify playlist.
- We watched Cruella recently and the soundtrack was really good. Bubbled up this gem from The Rolling Stones which I hadn’t heard in a while. I love the piano sound in She’s a Rainbow.
- I forgot how much I love Paper Planes by M.I.A. Sorry, Joe Strummer, but her song’s better than Straight To Hell.
- Black Pumas and Lucius do a great cover of Strangers by The Kinks.
- I wish Hey Rosetta! would get back together. Until then, Red Heart is worth having on a good playlist.
Have any songs on repeat? I’d love to hear them. Just hit reply and tell me what you’re listening to these days.
I’m rewatching Ted Lasso, one of the best shows ever. I’ll leave you with this wonderful quote from Ted himself:
I think if you care about someone and you got a little love in your heart, there ain't nothin’ you can't get through together.
Thanks for signing up for Regular Communication.
