Happy Pride Month, y’all. Here’s my favorite tweet I’ve seen so far, from the amazing team at Studio Gradients (who were responsible for the design work for Biden’s 2020 campaign BTW):
I’m CIS and heterosexual but, even so, I have skin in the game here. We all do. The world’s a better place when people are treated with respect and kindness and afforded the same rights as everyone else.
Unfortunately, the world is a relatively shitty place. And LGBTQ+ folks are still struggling for rights and recognition, along with so many other underrepresented groups. But celebrating our differences, cultures, and histories is one of the best ways to support each other, regardless of how you yourself identify. So keep celebrating and supporting each other during Pride Month (and every month) and keep fighting for the rights and recognition everyone deserves. ✌️
Some Interesting Things
I’m not that old—and not really a web dev anymore—but Jens Oliver Meiert’s Thoughts for the Aging Web Developer resonated with me, especially since I’m undertaking some of the advice he is advocating.
Maggie Appleton’s look at digital gardening is really in the weeds (har har) but was delightful to read.
For a little visual inspiration, check out this fantastic website for Indigital Schools—an Australian educational tech program focused on teaching digital skills with an indigenous perspective. The color, icons—and mission—are all exceptional.
“There is no normal user” should be pinned on every designer’s monitor at this point. One of many great, quick tips on practicing inclusive design on a daily basis from Renee Fleck on the Dribbble blog. For a longer read, this is a great article from Janey Lee and Shreya Gulati on the Spotify Design blog about uncentering yourself to create more inclusive designs.
The Regular Communication Playlist
Here are the songs keeping me going this week. Follow along on my official Spotify playlist.
- Black Dog by Arlo Parks was featured on the most recent episode of Song Exploder and it’s great.
- I’m not a huge fan of the full Men At Work version of Overkill, but when it’s just Colin Hay doing it acoustic? Love it.
- Spotify’s Release Radar brought a bounty this week. Including some new Radical Face called Dreamless Sleep.
- And Rostam’s new track, Starlight. It’s a wonderful example of form following function in music production.
- And, finally, some new Hobo Johnson, earnest as always. I want to see the world, too, Hobo.
Have your own favorite songs getting you through the week? I’d love to hear them. Just hit reply and let me know what I should listen to next.
I’m lucky to have such a wonderful person representing me in the Michigan House of Representatives. Here’s how Representative Laurie Pohutsky kicked off June:
Pride starts tomorrow, but this evening I just wanted to remind everyone that Pride honors a riot started by a Black trans woman, so if you struggle to say Black lives matter or think “trans issues” are just too complicated, kindly keep your rainbow emoji to yourself.
