Howdy. It’s been a while. If you’re new to the list (about 70 or so since I last sent it), welcome to my newsletter. If you’ve been on it for some time, welcome back—things have changed.
Up until now, I’ve referred to this email as The Intermittent Newsletter. I thought it was a clever name and, more to the point, I was lazy about sending it on any regular schedule. Which is kind of ridiculous, considering I work in email marketing and know the value of an engaged group of people like you. I also know how therapeutic writing and connecting with others can be.
Quite frankly, I’ve done a bad job engaging with you all. And, I could use a little therapy.
So, I’m scrapping the Intermittent part and embracing the name Regular Communication. Similar format as before (a bit of writing, links to cool shit, and whatnot), but delivered once a week, with a little more focus, honesty, and engagement.
I appreciate you signing up (regardless of when that was) and look forward to a continued conversation. If you ever want to chat, just reply to this email.
Some Interesting Things
As part of my personal, online therapy, I blew up my website. Along with archiving the majority of the past decade, I stripped it down to the essentials. There’s a post all about starting from scratch(ish).
This article from Remy Sharp (creator of JS Bin) is a really good reminder that… well, he says it better than I ever could:
We, you and I, the developers, consumers and businesses are responsible for demanding more complicated (and more thorough) tools. We are not, however, beholden to complexity.
Language is wonderful. As are feelings. That’s why the Feelings Wheel from Geoffrey Roberts make me so happy. Or, more specifically, optimistic, hopeful, and inspired.
The Regular Communication Playlist
I fucking love music. Listening to it, playing it, recording it… it’s all magic. It’s one of the main ways I manage stress and process the world, so I thought, “Why not share some of the songs getting me through the week?”
So, I created a new public playlist on Spotify. Every week, I’ll add 5 or 6 songs that I’m digging and share them with you via email. This week, I’ve been really into:
- The original version of Torn from Edna Swap.
- David Wax Museum’s newer release, Helen, can you forgive me?
- The demo version of The Cars’ Drive, which is better than the full production.
- The killer (pun intended) remix of RTJ’s ooh la la by Mexican Institute of Sound & Santa Fe Klan.
- The Stranger from Dijon and a whole bunch of folks.
- And Easy by Mesadorm, which is everything right now.
I’m always looking for new music to get me through the day, so send me your favorite tracks. Maybe they’ll make the playlist.
Until next time,
Civic-minded designer, writer, and marketer.
Thanks for signing up for The Intermittent Newsletter.
