I wrapped up my last scheduled workshop/speaking gig of the year earlier this month (thanks, Dave, for inviting me!). After running a fair number over the last few years, I think it's time to blow up my typical format in favor of something more interactive. You can read more about my thought process on my blog.
I wanted to pose a question to you, reader: What was the best workshop or talk you ever attended and what made it so great? OK, that was two questions. But, if you email me and let me know, I'll be extraordinarily grateful. So will any of my future students.
My MacBook Air is old, beat up, and increasingly unreliable. Which means I'll be in the market for a new laptop in the next few months. But, with all the reports of the new MacBook Pro problems, I'm wondering if it's a good time to check out Windows.
I've been inspired by Dave Rupert's #davegoeswindows adventure to try it out. And there's something to be said for getting a more powerful machine for less money, with actual, useful ports that don't require expensive dongles. Plus, I respect Microsoft's recent commitment to open source and web technologies. I'm wondering if I shouldn't support that move over Apple's focus on OS lock-in and proprietary technologies.
It would be a massive change, as I've been a Mac guy for a long time. But what do you think? Any strong opinions? Just reply to this email and let me know.
I had the opportunity to interview Jacque Boltik about her fascinating work with email, Python, and data over on The Better Email blog. If you haven't read it already, go check it out.
The fine folks over at Mozilla put together this great overview of CSS grid. Once I release The Better Email on Design, I'm totally taking some time to play around with CSS grid (and a few other things). Which will likely result in Yet Another Website Redesign™, but that's how it goes.
And some more news from Mozilla: MDN is partnering with Microsoft, Google, Samsung, and the W3C to improve MDN's already superb docs.
Finally, a fun story from Jason Kottke on how he came to be an extra in the last season of Halt and Catch Fire.
Strong reactions to any of the above? Want to chat about the web, email, or anything else? Email me and let me know. I promise I'll reply as soon as I can.
